Raspberry Pi 5 8GB

What is Raspberry Pi 5?

Featuring a 64-bit quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor running at 2.4 GHz, Raspberry Pi 5 provides a 2-3x increase in CPU performance compared to Raspberry Pi 4! Raspberry Pi 5 also brings a huge list of great new features and improvements, making it the best Raspberry Pi yet!

Welcome to the newest generation of the Raspberry Pi: the everything computer.

Raspberry Pi 5 Innovations

2-3x CPU performance increase

The new 64-bit quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor at the heart of the Raspberry Pi 5 runs at 2.4 GHz with encryption extensions, 512 KB L2 caches per core, and 2 MB shared L3 cache.

This new Broadcom BCM2712 SoC (System on Chip) provides a 2-3x increase in performance over the previous generation Raspberry Pi!

Improved graphics performance with dual 4Kp60 display output

The Raspberry Pi 5 gets a significant boost in graphics performance from the 800MHz VideoCore VII GPU connected to the BCM2712 via PCI Express.

This allows the Raspberry Pi 5 to deliver full dual 4Kp60 display output via micro HDMI. These performance improvements provide a smooth desktop experience when browsing the web and streaming video.

Advanced I/O capabilities including PCI-E!

For the first time, this is a full-size Raspberry Pi computer using silicon produced in-house.

The RP1 "south bridge" provides the bulk of the I/O capabilities for the Raspberry Pi 5 and provides a step change in peripheral performance and functionality.

  • Total USB bandwidth is more than doubled, providing faster transfer speeds to external UAS drives and other high-speed peripherals
  • Peak MicroSD card performance is doubled thanks to support for SDR104 high-speed mode
  • Single-lane PCI Express 2.0 interface providing support for high-bandwidth peripherals.

Dual camera/display (CSI/DSI) ports included!

The RP1 also offers a pair of quad-lane 1.5Gbps MIPI transceivers, tripling total bandwidth and enabling new dual CSI/DSI ports that support any combination of up to two cameras or displays.

This, along with display performance improvements from the redesigned Raspberry Pi Image Signal Processor (ISP), opens your Raspberry Pi to new project opportunities and major improvements for those using Raspberry Pi 5 for commercial and industrial applications.

power button

Makers and enthusiasts have been asking for a dedicated onboard power button on the Raspberry Pi for as long as we can remember – and the Raspberry Pi 5 finally delivers this much-desired convenience!

Real time clock (RTC)

A real-time clock (RTC) built into the motherboard allows you to maintain time/date information even when you turn it off or are not connected to the internet (with a backup battery connected).

A special header has been added to the board to allow the use of a backup battery for the RTC (battery sold separately). A lithium battery with a compatible head will be available after or shortly after the launch of the Raspberry Pi 5.

Special fan header

The Raspberry Pi 5 includes a new dedicated fan header to the right of the familiar GPIO pin header, allowing you to connect and run a cooling fan without interfering with your GPIO-connected devices. Now you can add HATs and other hardware without needing workarounds to connect fans.

The official Raspberry Pi 5 case and Active Cooler use the JST connector for this particular header.

Dedicated UART header

Another useful addition to the Raspberry Pi 5 is the dedicated UART header. You can now debug your Raspberry Pi 5 and control it without interfering with your GPIO pins.

This dedicated UART header also allows debugging from boot and is designed to be used with the Raspberry Pi Debug probe for fast, convenient debugging.
